This type of mat is very popular for photographs and memorabilia, which means there are often several different sizes to work with. On a project with many mat openings, layout time may be more than actual cutting time. Once any plan has been worked up—save it! It may come in handy again.

When designing a mat with multiple openings, cut pieces of paper to represent each opening, then experiment with papers on a blank piece of matboard. When the design looks good, mark layout and cut mat.
