The new Model 650-1 Framer's Edge Elite Mat Cutter represents an improvement over the earlier version, which was simply called the Model 650 Framer's Edge. The new version eliminates the most bothersome issues from the earlier version and adds some new features that the average user will find most welcome.
Blade Depth Adjustment is Easier
An issue that was a common complaint in the old version was the method of blade depth adjustment. It required an allen key to turn a small imbedded screw in the top of the cutting head. Not only was this in no way intuitive, if the allen key was lost, blade depth adjustment became problematic.
In the new version, the blade depth adjustment is much simpler. By simply turning a small rod at the rear of the cutting head, the depth of the blade can be increased or decreased. Adjusting the depth no longer requires a tool of any kind and can be done by hand.
Lift Rail and Guide Rail are Improved
Another common complaint in the old version was the prohibition against pushing down or even resting your hand on the lift rail. The lift rail is the bar you use to raise or lower the guide rail. When cutting mats, the lift rail is a natural place to rest your hand. But in the old version if you exerted any pressure on the lift rail, the guide rail would bow up slightly over the mat, causing the blade not to penetrate.
In the new version, this problem has been eliminated. You can rest your hand on the lift rail if you like. Bowing of the guide rail over the mat is no longer an issue because the new guide rail is both wider and heavier than the old version.
Advancements in Slop Control, Decreased Wear and a Smoother Glide
In the old version of the Framer's Edge Mat Cutter slop and wobble of the cutting head on the guide rail was addressed by replacing the Teflon bearing that was sandwiched between the cutting head and the guide rail. This required detachment of the guide rail from the lift rail, removal of the cutting head from the slide rod, and assembly of the new bearing to the cutting head. It also required a delay as you waited for the replacement bearing to arrive in the mail.
In the new version, slop and wobble is dealt with instantly by turning a pair of screws on the cutting head with the screwdriver included. This simple method of eliminating slop is made possible by the inclusion of ball bearings in the cutting head. Rather than relying on a Teflon, the new version rides on ball bearings, making for a dramatic decrease in wear and insuring a much smoother glide.
Other Improvements
In addition, the new 650-1 Framer's Edge Elite Mat Cutter comes with a 32" squaring arm (an improvement over the 27" squaring arm included in the earlier version). The squaring arm installs quickly with an improved clip and screw method that eliminates the two separate screws and an alignment tool required by the earlier version.
Taken altogether, the new, improved Model 650-1 represents a big improvement over the earlier version, making your mat cutting experience easier and more productive.
